Megakaryocytes are large bone marrow cells that produce platelets. Under normal conditions, they never leave the marrow. If megakaryocytes show up in your bloodstream, it’s highly abnormal and usually indicates serious bone marrow disruption, myeloproliferative disorders, or severe systemic inflammation. This is not a routine marker and typically only shows up on advanced or manual blood smears.
