TMAO (Trimethylamine N-oxide)

TMAO is a compound produced when your gut bacteria metabolize certain nutrients—mostly choline, carnitine, and lecithin—and your liver converts them. Elevated TMAO levels have been linked to cardiovascular risk, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction, though the research is still evolving. Higher levels often reflect gut microbiome imbalances, excess animal product intake, or impaired renal clearance.
