What to know

How Minoxidil + Dutasteride Capsules works and how to take it.

How Minoxidil + Dutasteride Capsules works

Minoxidil can support hair growth by influencing the hair-growth cycle. Dutasteride reduces production of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a hormone involved in pattern hair loss. Oral minoxidil and dutasteride are used off-label for hair loss. Approval of either ingredient for another condition does not establish the safety or effectiveness of this compounded combination or its specific strengths.

How to take

Take only the dose and frequency on your prescription label. The 30-, 60-, and 90-day package descriptions assume one capsule daily; your provider must confirm the directions. Swallow capsules whole. Do not open, crush, or chew them. Do not change your dose or add other hair-loss medications without checking with your provider. If you miss a dose, follow your pharmacist's instructions. Do not take extra capsules to make up for a missed dose. Follow the pharmacy's storage instructions and keep the medication away from children and pets. Anyone who is pregnant or could become pregnant should not handle these dutasteride-containing capsules.

FAQ

Common questions

What is in each capsule?

Each capsule contains minoxidil 0.25 mg and dutasteride 0.05 mg. The dutasteride amount is 0.05 mg, not 0.5 mg.

How much does it cost?

The medication price is $1 per capsule: $30 for 30 capsules, $60 for 60 capsules, or $90 for 90 capsules. Any additional charges are shown separately before checkout.

Are these 30-, 60-, and 90-day supplies?

They contain 30, 60, and 90 capsules. Those quantities last 30, 60, and 90 days only when your prescription directs you to take one capsule daily. Follow your prescription label.

Is this medication FDA-approved for hair loss?

No. Oral minoxidil is approved for certain cases of severe high blood pressure, and dutasteride is approved for an enlarged prostate. Their use for hair loss is off-label. This compounded combination is not FDA-approved.

Can I combine it with other hair-loss treatments?

Check with your provider first, including before using topical or oral minoxidil, finasteride, or another dutasteride product. Combining treatments can duplicate ingredients or increase side effects.

Could it affect sexual function or fertility?

Dutasteride can affect sex drive, erections, ejaculation, and semen characteristics. Discuss fertility plans and any symptoms with your provider before starting or continuing treatment.

What should I know about pregnancy and handling?

Dutasteride can harm a developing fetus and can be absorbed through the skin. Anyone who is pregnant or could become pregnant should not handle these capsules, especially if damaged or leaking. If contact occurs, wash the area immediately with soap and water and contact a clinician.

Can I donate blood while taking this?

Do not donate blood during treatment or for at least 6 months after your last dose of dutasteride.

What monitoring might I need?

Your provider may recommend checking blood pressure, pulse, swelling, and treatment response. Tell any clinician ordering a PSA test that you take dutasteride because it can lower the result.

Side effects and important safety information

Possible effects include unwanted facial or body hair, dizziness, headache, lower blood pressure, fluid retention, or a faster heartbeat. Dutasteride can cause reduced sex drive, erection or ejaculation changes, and breast tenderness or enlargement. Oral minoxidil carries a boxed warning for serious heart-related risks, including fluid around the heart and worsening chest pain. Seek emergency care for chest pain, severe trouble breathing, fainting, or swelling of the face or throat. Contact your provider promptly for new swelling, rapid weight gain, a racing heartbeat, or concerning breast changes. Before treatment, tell your provider about heart or kidney disease, low blood pressure, liver disease, pheochromocytoma, and all medications or supplements. Blood-pressure medicines and medicines that affect dutasteride metabolism need review. Do not use during pregnancy. Discuss breastfeeding and fertility plans before treatment. Dutasteride can affect semen characteristics and lowers PSA, which can affect interpretation of prostate screening. Its labeling also includes a warning about an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer in a clinical trial. This is not a complete list of risks. Read the pharmacy information and discuss questions with your provider.

Prescription required. Hair-loss use is off-label. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved; FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing. A licensed provider determines whether treatment is appropriate, and an independent pharmacy dispenses the prescription. Results vary. Do not use during pregnancy. Do not donate blood during treatment or for 6 months after the last dose of dutasteride.
