SDMA is a biomarker for kidney function, often considered more sensitive than creatinine. It rises earlier in the course of kidney dysfunction, even when creatinine and eGFR still look normal. SDMA is a byproduct of protein metabolism and is cleared almost entirely by the kidneys—making it a strong indicator of renal filtration efficiency and early-stage kidney stress, especially in people with high protein intake or muscle mass.
